Where are we going? she asked.
We're heading east, he answered, but we could head north or south.
As we traveled east on Route 74, this question was on everyone's mind. A question our fearless leader, Greg Sutter, refused to answer. We had just departed Hendersonville, NC, heading to an undisclosed destination.
Bessie the Talking Cow at the Billy Graham Library
Our first stop - surprise, surprise - was a visit to the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, NC, while a select few chose to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Do you know who this famous racer is? I bet your kids and grandkids do.
We then dined in Charlotte, NC, at the fabulous Bentley's on 27, known for its fantastic skyline view and French-style delicacies. I highly recommend returning at night with your honey to try their guéridon cooking - a tableside preparation - for a unique dining experience. See the video here: https://youtu.be/tepWAsR_vQs.
Twenty-seven stories above the city, the view was amazing. Oh, and the food was amazing, too!
Our final destination? Wilmington, NC, along the Cape Fear River. Do you know why it's called Cape Fear? The name dates back to a 16th-century expedition when a ship became embayed around the cape and the sailors feared they would shipwreck, alas Cape Fear!
We dined, we toured, and we dined some more. Some of our highlights included seeing the USS North Carolina, the Bellamy Mansion - a 19th-century Antebellum home with its preserved slave quarters - a guided tour of Southport via electric car, a ferry to Fort Fisher, the NC Aquarium and the Tobacco Museum.
